The colour theory of the impressionists has originated because of the discovery of the prism. The prism causes light to shatter into colours. Consider the colours of the rainbow. It was concluded from this that black and white are not colours and should not appear as colours in the painting. Pierre works exclusively with the colours yellow, two colours of red, blue and green. All colours in between are mixed. The possibilities are really fascinating and endless.

The base

The base deserves special attention. Baring in mind the end result it is to be preferred to paint the base in one colour. Ochre or grey or beige or even a reddish brown base have a picturesque effect and influence. This effect that the base has is also called the optical grey which gives the painting an undertone, varying from light hearted to serious.

Handwriting

My handling of the brush, also called the handwriting of the painter, is spontaneous, powerful and playful. My intention in this is that delicate nuances appear between various colours. These colour shades begin to vibrate placed next to each other. It is as if the colours dance. These optical moves contribute to a clear and fresh appearance.

The session

The idea that an impressionist painting should be made in one session is not absolute. Should the subject require more sessions it is however wise to make sure that the circumstances such as light are constant as much as possible. This will also help to avoid corrections thus maintaining the spontaneous appearance.
